An inside look at how Zazie Beetz got ready for her first-ever Oscars

Zazie Beetz sparkled from head to toe at her first-ever Oscars ceremony. A presenter for the big night, the Joker star slipped into—or in her own words, was “sewn into”—a black sequined two-piece Thom Browne set, which featured a strapless corset with a fringed hem and a slim-fit midi skirt. Bulgari’s emerald-accented “Divas’ Dream” choker, which featured 120 carats worth of diamonds, added a pop of color to the German American actor’s ensemble.

Inspired by Beetz’s gown, makeup artist Tyron Machhausen wanted to evoke a more understated brand of glamour by giving her glowing skin, subtly bronzed cheeks, and soft, smoky eyes (layering and blending Chanel Stylo Yeux pencils in Mat Taupe and Black Wood). “When I saw Zazie’s dress, I knew I wanted to keep her makeup simple and contemporary,” he explains. “I wanted to imitate a worn-in look, as if you just came from a party the night before, but still glowing and looking fresh.” This spirit was echoed by her “French manicure with a twist”—her pointed tips punctuated with a gleaming jet-black polish by nail artist Gina Oh.

Always one to get experimental with her natural Afro—“We are all about changing stereotypes and changing the way women of color are perceived on the red carpet,” she told Vogue—her cloud of curls was molded into a gorgeous high-low updo with a curtain of ringlet fringe by hairstylist Lacy Redway.

Here, Beetz shares snaps from her “Breakfast With Bulgari” glam session.

“Looking through some jewelry as my whole team gets me ready! We’ve got Tyron Machhausen on makeup, Lacy Redway on hair, Solange Franklin as my stylist, and Bettina doing my nails!”
